Governance

Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat Logo

Governance is about the rules and the structures through which countries address sustainable development issues. Canada pressed for strengthened, more efficient and more coordinated governance across the entire sustainable development agenda. Improved governance will lead to better coordination and more effective sustainable development action.

Specifically, Canada pursued improvements to international environmental governance. This will help deliver results - not simply for their obvious and important environmental ends, but because they have other beneficial effects on economies, societies and on the health of people.

At the Summit, Canada demonstrated its commitment to improved environmental governance by increasing its contribution to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) by $5.7 million over four years, more than double its current contribution, to influence environmental governance.
