Partnerships to Achieve Sustainable Development

Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat Logo

The World Summit is largely centred on the recognition that governments cannot alone ensure the achievement of sustainable development, but rather that progress in this direction depends on partnerships, particularly with the private sector and civil society, and engagement at all levels. It represents a challenge for all countries to bring forward concrete proposals that both address tangible sustainable development issues and contribute to the longer-term objective of a more equitable, stable and prosperous world.

Drawing upon the energy and enthusiasm of the private sector and civil society, Canada will promote partnerships to provide innovative Canadian approaches and technologies and to work hand-in-hand with developing countries to help alleviate poverty.

Canada is also placing particular emphasis on partnerships related to the sustainable management of natural resources, notably forests and mining.
